Long wedges cut from 2x4s are extremely effective for removing difficult flooring.
Removing old particle board floor.
Oh yeah and don t forget the sledgehammer.
Continue cutting and removing small sections of the floor until all the material between the flooring joists is gone.
Since you will be on your knees with a lot of nails staples and screws on the floor around you knee pads are also a must.
Use a hole saw without the drill bit to drill a circle around the nails.
Protect your hands from the saw with leather gloves.
No contractor looks forward to removing particleboard it is so weak that it breaks apart and doesn t pull up the nails with it.
Since ceramic tile started to replace linoleum as bathroom and kitchen floor covering 20 25 years ago many remodeling projects i encounter these days involve tearing up out of date ceramic tile.

Step 2 cutting the underlayment.
After removing the first section of subfloor you can locate the remaining.
Also remove any baseboards and trim using a pry bar.
My experience with removing old particle board sub flooring was to use a pry bar like this.
That way you can remove the full sheets and easily pull out the nails afterwards.
Pull out any remaining nails in the area where the particle board has been removed.
This will make lots of pieces of the particle board that are relatively easy to handle and clean away.
Use a flat pry bar to remove the damaged particle board.
Before starting to remove the underlayment remove all furniture from the room.
